Felipe de Jesus Cantu also arrived in the Manassa area in mid 1800. Felipe married a daughter of Juan Estevan Francisco and Carmelita Salazar, her name was Maria de la Refugio. Felipe and Refugio are buried at Los Cerritos Catholic Cemetary. Antonio Salazar, a brother to Refugio, and the first mormon of the family is buried at Los Cerritos Mormon Cemetary or could be known as Manassa Cemetary. |

Juan Francisco Estevan Salazar & Maria de la Carmelita Salazar y Valdez founded ranch at Manassa. Came from Chamita, Rio Arriba, NM in the mid to late 1700. One of Francisco Estevan's older sons became one of the first Spanish Catholic to Mormon Spanish converts. A March 1985 Ensign (magazine of the LDS church) has documented a story on his conversion. Estevan Francisco and Carmelita are buried at the church yard or under the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Conejos. |
